Who eats mostly fruit?

I’m trying to lose weight, and anyways I love fruit…but its scary to read that it causes high blood sugar that could lead to diabetes…what about you?

  • its fine to eat mostly fruit, but take it easy with the disaccharide fruits – they are quite glycemic – raise your blood sugar too much. These would be: banana, pineapple, date, navel orange, seedless grapes.

remember a fruit is anything that carries seeds and this includes: cukes, zucchini, tomatoes, bell pepper, olives.

take in enough greens, fats/oils, and salt, and you should be okay. you’ll probably know if your blood sugar is spiking and falling bc you will be really high after eating and then crash later.

I eat a very high ratio of fruit in my diet without any blood sugar issues. It leaves me feeling completely satisfied without a heavy feeling at all and refreshed. I eat almost all my fruit with greens (celery, cucumber or leafy greens). Fruits I crave are papayas, mangos pineapples, blackberries, and tomatoes. I love dates too and put them in banana smoothies or have with celery or cucumbers to round out their sugars.

Some days I just eat fruits and no veggies and I feel no negative side effects. Just remember to take a variety of sweet fruit and non- sweet fruit. Not all fruits have to be sweet. Non-sweet fruits include tomatoes, avos, green and yellow squash, bell peppers, eggplant, cukes (cucumber), olives, and cacao. Basically any food that can be picked without totally killing the plant is a fruit. Fruit will NOT cause diabetes and may prevent it. Diabetes is caused by highly processed sugars like cane sugar, white sugar, and syrups. You also said you are trying to lose weight so fruit is your best food because you can eat all the fresh fruits you want and still reach your ideal weight. Dont fear the fruit, Love the fruit :)

heyitsmahsa—i seriously recommend NOT WORRYING. by simply changing your diet to raw vegan foods, no matter what quantity you need to feel full, or what combination, you will start to lose weight EFFORTLESSLY. have a little faith for now… once you see the results and your body changes (inside) you’ll start to naturally pair certain foods down to fit your needs.

i was never ever the type of person to be able to lose weight easily… and i wasn’t even trying, it just happens.

one more thing: if you love fruit, eat it! you want to stay motivated to eat raw. eat what you love!

I’ve heard differing opinions on this issue.

One school believes in a low fruit diet, favoring non-sweet fruits, and low to medium glycemic fruits. Sweet fruits (bananas, papaya, mangoes, dates) and dried fruits are eaten in strict moderation.

Another believes that since fruits have fiber, they do not lead to diabetes or hypoglycemia. The fiber balances the blood sugar.

Lastly, I have also heard fruits are fine, as long as you limit high-sugar, low-mineral fruits like dates, bananas, and seedless fruit (seedless fruits have been heavily hybridized). Sweet fruits like papaya, mangoes, figs and durian are somewhat glycemic, but also densely mineralized, which keeps the blood sugar in check, they’re ok.

My vote is for the last school of thought. See what works for you, and go with it! :)

Sometimes the amount of misinformation posted on these forums astounds me.

DreamBrother, I suggest you look up any glycemic index table of common foods before you scare people with half truths and lies. You will find that bananas, oranges, and grapes have a low glycemic index (55 or less). Pineapple is a medium glycemic food (59-69). You are correct about dates, assuming you are referring to dried dates, then they have a high glycemic index (>70).

Fruit sugar or fructose is a monosaccharide not a disaccharide!

And when you say to take in enough salt, I hope you are not referring to the poisonous chemical called table salt but are referring to natural sodium in fresh fruits and vegetables.

I think as an experiment I will try eating all fruit for 1 week. Maybe the reason why I feel lightheaded when I eat it is because it is so cleansing.

  • achin70achin70 Raw Newbie

I just wanted address this issue of fruits w/o criticizing anyone or stepping on anyone’s toes. LOL. :)

I think seeded grapes are fine, but the seedless varieties, from what I’ve read, tend to be higher in sugar and lower in minerals. Also, if the seeds are missing, you wonder what other nutrients are missing from the fruit. It would be interesting to see a Kirlian image (technique showing energetic “snapshot” or lifeforce of a food) comparing the two.

A food’s glycemic index is instructive, but I personally like to use the glycemic load. A food’s glycemic index is based on 50 grams of useable carbs in a food. Glycemic load, however, is based on a standard serving of a food.

So bananas have a glycemic index of 51, which is pretty low, but a glycemic load of 12, which is pretty high. This is because bananas are pretty high in carbohydrates. So you don’t have to eat a whole lot of banana to reach 50 grams of useable carbs. But if you eat a 4.5 oz serving of bananas, the glycemic load is 12.

Fresh fruit does not cause diabetes. This is a myth, based on nothing.

  • yes the sugar in fruit alone does not cause diabetes.

I eat a ton of fruit and I feel great…a grapefruit in the morning is the best thing ever…in fact I had one 3 hours ago and I won’t be ready for lunch for probably one more hour. it doesn’t spike your blood sugar or make you hungrier

  • achin70achin70 Raw Newbie

This is an interesting thread that has me thinking if some people are just more susceptible to diabetes or hypoglycemia. We have a number of contributors to this thread who don’t seem to be affected adversely by fruit sugars. However, some people are genetically pre-diabetic/pre-hypoglycemic, correct? :)

  • KhaasLadkiKhaasLadki Raw Newbie

I have never heard that fruit could cause diabetes before? I think if you want to eat sugar get it from fruit instead of elsewhere! Some days I only eat fruit and I don’t have high blood sugar levels (I just had some bloodwork done). Although dried fruit does have a higher sugar level than regular, it’s still natural sugar and that’s fine with me! (although sometimes I can tell when I’ve eaten too much dried fruit – kindof like “day-after-halloween-syndrome” thing.. but not as bad!). Also, I lost 40 lbs on fruit smoothies – and it used to be difficult for me to lose weight until I changed my diet. Just changing your diet to more raw in general will help you to lose weight!

I have a couple additional thoughts.

If you have the type of body that runs well on carbs, you’ll likely feel strong eating a lot a fruit. However, if you do better with a high protein diet, eating a lot of fruit probably won’t keep you blood sugar as stable.

Also, the cleaner you are on a cellular level, the less you will be able to tolerate missteps. So if you usually eat a lot of berries and other low to medium glycemic fruits, and then one day you pop a bunch of hybridized seedless grapes, you will likely experience a blood sugar spike. Most of us probably aren’t one that level yet. I imagine this only applies to some long-term raw foodists :)

  • AKAAuburnEyesAKAAuburnEyes Raw Newbie

Our bodies actually run on carbs, it is our main fuel source. Protein is not a fuel source at all, except in the case of starvation where the body with break down protein to convert it to carbs.

I cant stress this enough there is no need to fret over “sugar” in fruit! For the last week I have eaten oranges and grapes daily! 10 to 15 oranges a day and grapes I have been eating up to 5 POUNDS in a day! And I feel great! fruit has the sugar our bodies are designed to eat..AKA FUEL! Before I went fruitarian i ate on a daily basis candy bars and chips, cookies etc, there were times I ate an ENTIRE PACKAGE of chewy chips ahoy, yes the WHOLE PACKAGE! And believe me I know what a sugar rush is , I got them all the time on junk, dizzyness, light headed etc and I DO NOT get this on fruit so thease are my personal thoughts as to the criticism of sugar and fruit. There are MANY days I will eat up to 30 bananas in a day. I eat everything mono which to me is best for digestion and for me this is 3 to 5 times a day,Very Normal! Oh and heres a sure shocker for everyone I eat 4 to SIX avocados a day, uh oh thats too much fat, um no it isnt, not for me! Avocados have the fats our bodies are designed to eat not the crap fat you get from porocessed foods and meat, and alll that junk. Oh and the question Ive been asked like 3 or 4 times the last couple of days”where do you get your protein?” ORANGES AND GRAPES! Plug it in www.nutritiondata.com and it shows right there the amount of protein and calcium as well as minerals. I love fruitarianism and it works for me wonderfully but for others it may not. I bottomed out at 155 and Im now 168 and healthy as Ive EVER BEEN!! I see it and FEEL it each and every day! A great book on this is “fruit: The Ultimate Diet” by ReJean Durette. To me theres no reason to worry about calories or fats etc, just eat when hungry and till full, and dont over do it, food is fuel not a hobby, most everyone goes by “breakfast, lunch, dinner. I dont eat this way i only eat when hungry not because its noon and “lunch time”, lol, or “dinner time” I could go on for way too long on this so Ill let it go here. Each person is different but for me its fruit! Rob

“food is fuel not a hobby”—that’s fantastic.

  • roadrunnerroadrunner Raw Newbie

Woops! I forgot to mention I am VERY active, I run 2 miles 4 times a week and ride my bike everywhere, plus my job is physical. And the other thing, as far as the avocados, I maintain 162 to 168 and dont gain any weight from eating avocados like that on a daily basis. Avocados are so good for you! Perhaps for a less active person this may not be good.I just wanted to clear up the “suger worries” of fruit. I wish my dad would eat fruit, he hates fruit. He is type 2 diebetic as of 2 years ago.He is 61 and spent most his life eating red meat and very little veggies and fruit, also drank a ton of Tab and Diet Coke and still does! Fruit for me is magic, it is the best! Rob

  • I don’t believe that fruit causes diabetes. It’s what nature gave us to eat. I think we need to listen to out bodies and give it the natural foods it desires. I find myself wanting fruits for days and then I suddenly want celery and other veggies. I think that we need to have more faith in our bodies and our hearts. I think we need to turn off the tv and tune out the “nutrition experts” telling us what to eat and what not to eat. All they care about is their paycheck… not your health.

  • pianissimapianissima Raw Newbie

good point roadrunner. actually, i cut back on the fruit because i wasn’t active enough for it. not great for cold climates.

stystrdust—agreed. getting too wrapped up in nutrition for nutrition’s sake is at best boring, and worst fear-inducing.

” I wish my dad would eat fruit, he hates fruit. He is type 2 diebetic as of 2 years ago.He is 61 and spent most his life eating red meat and very little veggies and fruit, also drank a ton of Tab and Diet Coke and still does!”

I know – my dad is the same way, but he doesn’t like Diet Coke – only the ‘real’ stuff (although he’s not diabetic – but if he continues on his ‘rampage’ I’m sure he will be). I try really hard to get him to eat better and he always says “It’s too hard.”. Not hard for me!

  • achin70achin70 Raw Newbie

AKAAuburnEyes: Based on what I’ve read, there is a smaller percentage of people who use protein as their primary source of fuel. I believe I’m like that. If I have a fruit smoothie in the morning w/o any concentrated protein, I will crash a couple hours later. And it’s alarming how quickly it happens!

I don’t want to sound like I’m getting down too much on fruit. It’s more about the type of fruit you’re consuming. And if you’re very active like roadrunner, you can get away with eating quite a bit.

One more thing I’d like to add is that many of you feel great eating a lot of fruit for now, but is it possible there are long-term repercussions? It’s possible I’m completely off base, for I’m certainly far from being an expert on this topic. :)

  • DONT BE AFRAID TO EAT FRUIT!! Fruit is our natural food. Thats why we are all born with a sweet tooth and children all love fruit. :-) The sugar in fruit is completely healthy for us. It is vastly differnet from refined sugar.

I’ve eaten mostly fruit for several years and have never felt better.

    Blessings,

    Audrey

I’m pretty young but I eat all fruit, with a little but of raw dairy, and some greens in salad. I ABSOLUTELY STAY AWAY FROM NUTS. I just cannot digest them, it seems like no body could. They are SO not my type of food.

  • RawKidChefRawKidChef Raw Newbie

And I get protein from brewer’s yeast.

  • I eat a lot of fruit and greens and do very well with both. I’ve never had a problem with bloodsugar, and diabetes runs in my family. Honestly, I also don’t have a problem with nuts, though I make sure not to over-do it. When I see recipes calling for massive amounts of nuts (particularly un-cheese or desserts), I either find alternatives or don’t make them at all.

I tend to eat a lot more fruits and greens as well. I’ve noticed that veggies give me unbelievable gas. Not a good thing when you are around a lot of people during the day and night. I haven’t noticed any probelms with my diet like this. Also, I only tend to eat nuts and seeds maybe every couple of days. They give me gas too, so I’m normally don’t eat them during the week, maybe on the weekend.

I eat a lot of fruit.

I read some naysayer on the web saying that cancers respond to fruit juice ingestion the same way they do to sugar water on the scans. I am not sure whether they are using “live” fruit juices. Also initially the cancer could be reacting to being fed but chemicals in the fruit my have some other inhibitive effect on cancers not seen in the first seconds of scan.

I believe that fruit and vegetables are good for you. I don’t restrict fruit intake.

  • I couldn’t survive without fruit! I eat 4-5 bananas a day (usually in smoothies.) I blend a whole cantaloupe or watermelon each day as well. (I drink each melon separately.) Fruits and seeds are my life! (Though salads and green smoothies are also a staple in my diet.) If you can learn to appreciate green smoothies with fruit, you will never have problems. Also, check out this article which talks about diabetes and how to prevent/heal yourself of it:

I eat fewer exotic fuits now than I used to and more greens (fewer varieties) and vegetable fruits. I also eat nuts and seeds, not necessarly in complicated recipes, but almost always ground or blended. I eat fewer bananas now than I have in the past and no tomatoes (both contain lectins that don’t agree with me). Now that summer is upon us, I’ll go back to eating more fruit. It’s a seasonal thing!
