Whole Foods

Ok, I think I may get to make my first trip to Whole Foods this weekend. Right now I only eat raw fruits and smoothies sometimes, the rest is cooked foods. I live in a small town and so I am going to try and go. I wanted to see if anyone could tell me what are some things I should pick up, considering it will probably be another month or two before I can go back. I love eating nuts. I am also interested in trying some of the recipes on here but don’t have any ingredients, especially desserts!! their is a cheesecake dessert on here that I would love to try to make!! thanks for any tips:)

Well, if you need fresh foods that will last a while(if stored in a cool place), consider carrots, zucchini, squashes, apples, cabbages, sun dried tomatoes and sun dried olives, and raw pecans and/or walnuts. Get some nice spices and things like raw dried coconut(if you can find it) and I would invest in a nice seaweed like dulse(whole preferably).

Be careful when buying nuts, as “raw” in the nut industry only means non toasted and usually heat is used to clean shells before shelling. Pecans should be a golden brown, never a darkish brown(never), and walnuts are a warm, very light brown. Raw stores often do not know this, as I have found, and sometimes sell rancid nuts.

Visit this site to watch for foods not to purchase

List of foods you can buy

I like to stock up on dates, raw flax crackers, golden flax seed, sesame & sunflower seeds, buckwheat, nuts in shell (shell them yourself, so they’re actually raw), exotic fruits, herbs/spices/seasonings

  • Thanks Alix & Winona, very helpful tips. I usually shell my nuts anyway, just to be safe!!

i bought some local nuts at the farmer’s market and asked if they were ever cooked/steamed. nope!

I never thought about shelling my own. that might open up some possibilities in the nut world.
