Will raw make my hair go back to blonde?

nycgrrlnycgrrl Raw Newbie

As a child, until about the age of 10, I had really wonderful, REALLY blonde, almost white hair. I loved it. Then, around 10 or 11 my hair started turning browner until it reached the dirty blonde, utterly dull color it is today.

Have you ever heard of a raw foodie’s hair changing color? I know about hair returning from gray to its original color, but what about going back to the color of your childhood?

Thanks!!

  • I’m no doctor, but I do know that since I have been doing raw food my hair has shown great improvements. It was never really an issue for me, but after a few weeks of a pretty strict raw food diet I have noticed significantly changes in my hair and nails. It seems very plausible that your hair color changing has been because of a slow but continuing mineral deficiency. I hope your diverse and raw diet can provide you with the minerals necessary to regain your childhood hair color. ;)

  • I don’t know the answer, but I’ve been 5 weeks raw now and when I was a kid I was golden blond and had what I called “angel hair” at my hair line..which was very soft new blond hair. That went away as I grew older..but has come back in the past few weeks, as blond as it was when I was a kid.

My hair is definitely lighter than it has been as an adult, but it could also be that I’m not as afraid of the sun. I still have a gray streak that I’ve had for years, but I’ve heard that genetic premature gray doesn’t change.

Can you hang out in the sun? My hair is kind reddish brown but can get almost blond in the sun.

You can always hope. Mine has only gotten grayer, darn it.

I have heard of some raw foodies says there hair color changed a bit. No one said it went back to their childhood color though. Someone said when they took tons of MSM it went more red I think. Even David Wolfe says this will happen.

Hair going gray is a lot different than your hair changing color when you are a kid. Gray hair is normally due to deficiency of minerals mostly copper – I have a few grays here and there. I had black hair was I was a baby and it started turning blonde right away and stayed pretty blonde until I was in like 4th grade and started getting darker. Now, it is like a medium brown.

Yeah, I liked my blonde hair better too. You could use lemon juice in the sun to get some blonde highlights in it. If you were once blonde, it should lighten nicely for you.

This topic makes me wonder about people of pure ethnicities who only have black hair. They always have the same color hair all their lives. It doesn’t really change from baby to getting older. (unless they color it or lighten it in the sun or get gray).

I am wondering if white Americans who are often a mix of different ethnicities have these hair color changes because they the different ethnicities in them. For example, my dad had black hair and my mom had blonde – Blonde is the dominant hair trait but it doesn’t really surprise me that my hair was black when I was born. I don’t know all that much about how genes work for this sort of thing but it is certainity interesting.

My point is that I don’t know if diet has all that much to do with it. Of course though if you get too much of some mineral you can get a hair color change. Like too much copper can make your hair change color but this also means you are toxic in this mineral which you don’t want. I believe that David Wolfe might be an excellent person to answer this question – he seems to know his minerals quiet well.

I was looking this up on the web and came across this article:

    http://www.thetech.org/genetics/ask.php?id=63

It basically says that the reason why our hair color changes from when we are kids is because certain genes get “turned off” – so in order to get your blonde hair back you would need to “turn on” the blond hair gene and “turn off” the darker hair gene. How you do this I have no idea – or if there even is a way to do this probably not. But it does sort of explain why the hair changes colors. This makes sense if your parents both had different hair colors like mine did.

    Pretty interesting stuff.!

I was looking at some of David Wolfes articles on his site too. He has one on minerals (he a big seller of those angstrom minerals). For those of you dealing with hair loss, a copper defiency could be a culprit. It might be useful to look at this article and check out the defiencies.

Ok, I actually had a conversation about this with a friend recently, and have a few insights. I was a blond kid too, and my hair got darker when I was around 7 and now it’s brownish. I grew up in Israel, where- surprise surprise- there are hardly any blonds. My mom always said that it’s the sun that makes your hair darker- most immigrants from European countries to Israel (Russia, Germany, Poland) arrive very blond and turn slowly darker, much like my dad who was almost white haired growing up and now has brown hair. But it makes no sense, right? I mean, the sun bleaches your hair… Well my friend said this- these are two different processes. Your hair bleaches from the sun- but that is old hair, and it just shows as highlights. From being out in the sun a lot, the roots will start coming in darker, just like your skin would tan- to protect itself from the sun. I thought it makes a lot of sense.

Morning_theft – That is very interesting story!

It could be related to where you live and the strength of the sun in your area too. Although, I believe that lack of sun makes your hair darker. More time you spend in the sun the lighter your hair will be. I mean, look at surfers – ever see a surfer with super blonde almost white hair but very dark roots. I am sure the sea salt water helps the process along too.

In any case, I wonder if the the sun might be responsible in some ways for turning on and off the blonde genes – just a muse – have no idea if that is true.

It makes sense in my case too – I spent lots of time outside in the summer when I was a kid – later, when we got an Atari and I got my own TV in my room and spent more time talking on the phone with my friends – I was outside less.

here is an article that explains why hair gets light in the sun. Unlike skin the color molecules in the hair break down in the UV light. As a former hair dresser, I know that the color molecules in the hair will break down and lighten when you bleach your hair – the sun can not deposit color and make your hair darker – only chemical coloring can do that. This also explains why your ends are normally lighter (even if not very visible to you) than your ends. The ends have been subjected to more sun than the roots and also things like chemicals in your water and shampoos if you use them. It weakens and breaks down the color molecules in your hair.

A womans hair naturally changes color and texture a few times throughout her life. The only thing a raw diet should do is perhaps make it smoother & shinnier not blonder. Try spraying in some lemon juice and sitting in the sun for a while.

I was really blond as a child too but as I have aged my hair has changed to a nice light brown and has turned pretty curly.

Try to love you hair the way it is right now and fall in love with it again if it changes. You will be a lot happier if you learn to love what you have.

My hair went from straight blond to curly/wavy brownish and is still changing! Now my eyebrows are finally catching up with my hair! I’ve had blond eyebrows my whole life (something I hated and corrected with a pencil) and now they’ve become the right color and need no more work! Yippie!

  • I was very blond when I was younger too.

I added a shower filter and tub filter and the blond is coming back and it’s soft like a childs.

    Get one their GREAT!

filter? Does it make the water soft water or something? I’m interested!

My hair used to be blond as a child but now it’s dirty dark blond and I have dyed it for years because I just can’t stand it. I”m definitely trying to be more natural now and I’d love to have decent hair!
