Worried!! Detox Symptoms ??

I am rather worried. Today – out of the blue after about 3 or 4 days of mostly raw food – that I have a rash appearing on my legs. I only noticed because I started madly scratching behind one of my knees and when investigating found small red dots all over my legs. Could this be detox symptoms? I have not been 100% raw.

I did notice last night that one of my calves was itching me but didn’t think anything of it, now I am a bit more worried! I have no other symptoms, I feel fine in myself, just these red dots!

  • It sounds more like an allergy… Have you tried any new foods lately? Worn wool? Sometimes I get something like that when I go from being really cold to really warm quickly… I just get a huge rash all over my arms and legs (but it goes away within an hour or so). It really does sound like an allergy… If it doesn’t go away soon, I’d do something about it… =S

For info on detoxing, goto Detoxing/Cleansing/Correcting Response.

Some other possibilities: Have you changed your cloths detergent or body soap or worn something someone else washed (allergy)? In the past (or present) have you had eczema, psoriasis, or any other skin condition? If so, you might be getting a flare up due to detoxing.

Try taking an Epson salt bath especially if it’s possibly detox. Also double water intake, some with 1/4 lemon squeezed in 8 ounces of water.

If you continue to be concerned, see a health professional.

  • Thanks for the advice. I think it may be an allergy, but detox might be playing a part. I had peach in my smoothie today which I haven’t had for a long time – if anything it would be that causing the reaction, everything else I have eaten before and recently. I just hope it goes down before work tomorrow!!

Lots of people say the legs collect toxins, so it wouldn’t be surprising if it is in fact a symptom of detox. However, especially if you wear long socks or tights, it would pay to consider your detergent as well. I also get itches on my right calf from time to time—it’s not too bad for me, and since it’s only on one leg I assume it’s a detox symptom. It usually only lasts a few days, and has progressively gotten less severe each time. Staying away from the aforementioned long socks or tights might help alleviate the itching, even if they’re not the cause.

  • My clothes washing stuff hasn’t changed recently so I don’t think that is the culprit. It is interesting about legs holding toxins though, maybe it is a combination of both an allergic and detox. These spots have now spread to cover most of my body, some places have more than others. I have had a shower in case of touching something strange and changed my clothes. I think it is something I have eaten :/

I have exactly the same thing on my lower legs – ever since I started using a rebounder after doing no exercise for months and months. I am convinced it is detox.

  • Wow. That’s interesting. I will keep my eye on it and see how it goes. It feels to be settling down now, I did take an antihistamine and it seems to be working which is a relief. Maybe it is something to do with detox then!!

  • Yep, I’m also convinced it’s detox.

I’m nowhere near 100% raw (I’m 8 months pregnant and worried about detox effects on the baby) but have implemented many raw habits in my house. We all have a completely raw (just fresh fruit mostly) breakfast and my 6-year-old son and I have been drinking green smoothies sometimes too. I noticed similar red spots on my legs – a little on my calves but on my thighs too. I didn’t think anything of it until my husband said had I seen the rash on our son’s legs. Same as mine. Then I thought it was just coincidence (or that I’d been neglecting my bed-linen laundry duties!) until I spoke to my newly raw-ish sister on the phone and she, out of the blue, mentioned that she had some little red spots on her legs too. Obviously then I put two and two together.

Anyway for me it was a warning sign – I’m very concerned about the detox effects on the baby (lots of evidence to suggest that the awful toxins your body sheds during detox go straight down the umbilical cord – and into breastmilk too) so I’m slowing things down even more. I’m gutted really, since I was already struggling with the concept of taking my time with this.

Glad it’s settling down anyway; if I were you I wouldn’t have taken the antihistamine though! Whether it is detox, an allergy, or a combination of both, the best thing is to let your body work through its own elimination process (that’s what is happening) without any so-called “help”. The anti-histamine has likely suppressed this process. Plus now you have the anti-histamine to de-tox as well!

A good question I tend to ask myself before taking ANY kind of medicine at all is: “Will what I am medicating for go away by itself if I take nothing?”. Whether we are talking hours or days doesn’t really matter – what matters is that if the body can heal itself then anything you give it to help is at best unnecessary and at worst harmful. I find the answer to that question is ALWAYS “yes” (so far, touch wood!). In fact the only instance I can think of where the answer would be “no” would be if I were unlucky enough to experience a life-threatening medical situation, in which I doubt the contents of my bathroom cabinet would be much use in any case!

I wouldn’t worry about it now though – it’s only one anti-histamine but just something to bear in mind for next time.
