Help to create a nut-free category on Gone Raw!

By Kandace May 14, 2008

We’ve noticed more folks interested lately in giving up nuts and finding no nut recipes. If you’d like to help make these recipes easier to find, go in and categorize your favorite nut-free recipes as nut_free and we’ll get this new category rolling. Thanks!

Thank you!!! As we roll into hot summer weather I can only handle so many recipes with nuts. Nuts can be wonderful, but they make meals so heavy. Can’t wait to try all the goodies in this new category!

What about coconut and seeds? Should the recipes also be free of these?

Good question. I like to know that as well.

I think so. It’s in with the whole lighter idea. Maybe more fruits and such?

There is a light category presently that I’m thinking is free of the seeds, etc also. Great resources for summertime!

I was about to suggest a ‘low-fat’ or ‘80/10/10’ category, to make it easier for people like me who are trying to cut out excessive fat from their diet, but still want to an interesting variety of recipes. So I am all for the ‘nut-free’ category. I think it would be great if it meant no seeds and oil as well.

Maybe we could get some nut-free cheeses? I know that’d be hard but we could try! (I might try some experimenting this weekend…)

When I started out on raw foods, I ate alot more nuts & fat than now. When I returned to Singapore (where it is summer all year round) my body gradually adjusted better to a lower fat diet. You just know you’re giving your body the right things when you feel balanced & comfortable! Personally, after eating this way for about a year, I now take less than 15 mins to whip up a meal – sometimes even less! For convenience, here are some tips I would like to share:

Cut up a few zucchinis or yellow squash (I like both for variety)using a spiralicer or saladdaco & store in the fridge. I try not to keep them more than 2 days. Whenever you are hungry, just throw some tomatoes, a couple of dates, a clove of garlic, dash of sea salt & a red pepper if you have one – blend & you have a healthy marinara sauce! Just pour them on the zucchini noodles & enjoy. If its winter, you can throw in a half of an avocado into the sauce & blend together – that will fill you up nicely.

I think its important to know that although we are reaping all the benefits of eating raw here, it may not be best for our body to take too much nuts, seeds, oils & fats (even if they are healthy). In fact, our body actually makes fat (for essential body functions) from all the food we take in, yes even fruits & vegetables.

Please remember that almonds are not nuts. The almond that we eat is seed within the pit of an almond fruit. The fruit is a bit like leather but still has a lot of sugar which makes it a popular ingredient fot cattle food.
