Servings:
serves 4 as a side, 2 as a meal

Another Israeli salad – I love the za’atar spices! They’re so different from anything you’ll have anywhere else.

Ingredients:

1 green bell pepper, diced
1 red bell pepper, diced
1 yellow bell pepper, diced
2 tomatoes, chopped
1 onion, chopped
1 cucumber, diced
dash salt & pepper, to taste
1 lemon, juiced
2 clove garlic, minced or pressed
3 tablespoon olive oil
½ teaspoon za'atar seasoning (can be found at most asian stores)

Preparation:

Mix all the veggies together in a bowl.
In a small bowl, whisk together lemon, garlic and olive oil. Drizzle over veggies and toss together to coat. Sprinkle with za’atar and serve!

I'm not familiar w/ zaatar, either, but your recipe sounds wonderful, and even if the spices have been toasted to enhance their flavor, you're only using 1/2 tsp of zaatar w/ all those other wonderful raw ingredients that make up 99% of the salad. I wouldn't hesitate to use it. Thanks for posting your recipe.

Oh, I didn't know they were toasted! I was under the impression they were like using the dried versions. Sorry, I'm not sure what spices are in mine at the moment, but I can look and see (and check if they're toasted! :o ) when I get home tonight.

zaatar is traditionally from syrian marjoram, sumac, salt, and sesame seeds. however most of the flavor comes from toasting all these - and any raw version i can think of would be the equivalent of making soymilk from sprouted soy beans.. yuck!

Is it possible for you (or anyone else) to list what is in the za'atar seasoning? We don't have an asian market anywhere near where I live, so I need to recreate the seasoning from "scratch" so I can try this recipe!

Ooh, that would be cool! you could arrange it really pretty, too, with all the colors. I have another salad like this posted but for some reason it doesn't show up on the main page - it's like a fruit salad with avocados and such. Yum! Glad you like! :D
