i found them to taste like banana, vanilla and garlic. i like the idea of blending it with banana to make it a bit milder. there is one in the kitchen and i'm a little afraid of it!

I ate a durian for the first time today, after hearing SO much about them (all conflicting information: 'they rock', 'they stink', 'they taste like bananas', 'they taste like potatoes'). Anyway--I thought it smelled fine! And it was soo yummmy :) Definitely pleased.

you said: 'thats a tough one' but do you have a little idea..the greener the better? the bigger the better? Durians ROCKS for real...you forget all about the smell

Sorry - between those last two comments there was another one, asking where to get fresh durians!

well when I go o buy mine at the Asian store mine was in a mesh bag as well. They usually freeze them during shipment and depending on the stores, they either keep them in the freezer or bring them out during the day so they are more visible or because of the stench. Hmmm.. so for picking a good one...thats a tough one. But I do know that you shouldnt pick one with a small hole on the shell because that means that a squirrel or insect has had a taste. So claim it first :)! What made you think yours was bad in first place?
