Macadamia Nutcracker

Servings:
"Makes 1 Nutcracker"How to open a macadamia nuts’ hard shell…
Ingredients:
1 nutcracker, hand held
1 hammer
1 vise grip (optional)
Preparation:
You hold the macadamia nut with the nutcracker or vise grip, rest it on a hard surface, and hit it with the hammer. I didn’t have to hit that hard, I think.
A Macadamia nut shell is hard so normal nutcrackers usually can’t open them or you have to get an expensive nutcracker for opening the nut. When i just used the hammer the macadamia nut bounced all over the room and still stayed intact. This is an inexpensive way to open them with common household tools, I think.

1. To make the macadamia nut
To make the macadamia nut cracking easier place them in the freezer one hour before you want to crack them

Your welcome, Debbietook! :)
Rawsiki- the towel method is a great alternative! Thanks! :) Haha! The rock method is as old as macadamia trees are! Very natural!

Yuna, although the stone worked quite well the bits used to go everywhere. I'm thinking I could target more precisely using a hammer. Hoping to try this later! Love raw macadamias. Thank you so much for this.

I usually wrap the nut in a towel and hit it with the hammer. It works perfectly. I also used to live by a macadamia nut tree (Oh such bliss!) and I would gather loads and sit outside and place them on a big rock with a little grove to place the nut it and I would crack it with another rock...a little messier than the towel version, but it got that sucker open! This sounds good too!

Did the stone method work well? Maybe a stone by itself would work better than a hammer alone because it is wide so the macadamia will not be able to move?

Hi Debbietook! Totally understand. :) It happens to me, too. Glad I could help! :)

Yuna - thank you! I'd been putting them on the kitchen floor then striking them with a stone (doorstop). This is infinitely more sensible and efficient.
