Tarta De Manzana (Spanish apple Tart)
Like apple pie, but SPANISH........
Crust
1 cup walnuts
1 cup pecans
15 dates, or to taste
1 tablespoon cinnamon
(optional)
Filling
2 large apples
1 cup apricot jam (dried apricots and dates to taste ground up with water)
2 tablespoons
cinnamon
date paste to taste (optional)
Topping
1 cup walnuts
1 cup dates
1. Cut up the apples into thin slices and let the slices oxidize (turn brown and soft) for as long as it takes to make the crust and jam
2. Combine the walnuts, pecans, dates, and cinnamon to
make the crust, grinding in the food processor until crumbly, and press into a pie dish
3. Make the apricot jam (if you don't have any in your fridge) in the food processor
4. Combine the apples, cinnamon, and apricot jam in a bowl, and taste some to see if it needs some date
paste
5. If it does need date paste (it depends on your tastes, there's no right or wrong), mix it in now
6. Pour the filling evenly into the pie
7. Grind up the walnuts and dates for the topping in the food processor, letting it get
to the crumbly texture of the crust
8. Sprinkle the walnut crumbs on top of the pie, evenly enough to cover the filling
9. Eat it at midnight in a romantic candlelit dinner (hahahaha.........joke about the spanish eating style)

1. This looks like a peach crumb
This looks like a peach crumb my grandma used to make! I bet it tastes just as good.
2. Finally got around to making
Finally got around to making this! Here's the modifications I tried. For the crust: I used half cup of each of the nuts, and around 4 dried prunes instead of the dates. It gives it more of a chocolate look.
For the topping I also cut the quantities in half and still had more than enough to top the pie. This time I did use dates. It's setting up in the fridge now, so I can't yet tell you how it tastes. It looks GREAT! Taste tested, was awesome! Nice to have the contrast with the darker crust on the bottom and the lighter crust on top. I would upload a pic, but I'm not sure how.
Om Shanti
3. Thanks for sharing this
Thanks for sharing this recipe! I made it three days ago and we still have two slices in the freezer. Thanks for the raw apricot jam recipe. I had not occured to me making it like that and it was super delicious. I did mixed the apples in the mixer, and pressed on pulse several times to they grated in smaller pieces blending with the jam. In this way, the filling does not separate from the crust.
4. awesome. I'm sensitive to
awesome. I'm sensitive to nuts and fruit together, so I might make a dehydrated banana crust or something. the filling looks so yummy! If I hadn't just eaten a nut paté I would totally be making that.
5. No, nothing is different. The
No, nothing is different. The apples separated a bit from the jam when it was refrigerated, but that is about it.
