Topic: Being Raw / Clean, Icelandic fish; to eat or not to eat, that is the question.

LOL no dodo, don’t be sorry i wasn’t offended, i think you have a right to defend yourself. but, it was very clear that you were not just defending yourself, you were supplementing your defense with offense. i have no problem with that, but following it with “namaste” as a peace declaration is extremely amusing to me..

MOTH – so glad the link has helped. Yay! I wish I could do something similar, but given my situation, I’m thinking more along the lines of local organic farms. I envy where you are in life – so exciting. Go for it!!

Topic: New to Raw / Anybody else find "raw" time-consuming and "difficult"?

My, this is an interesting thread. My experience is with the people who said they spend less time in the kitchen, I try to stay around 80% raw and I’m also one who cooks for a SAD partner (he tries, but he’s a TERRIBLE cook, and he mostly refuses to grasp the raw concept, he finds it threatening). I also love to cook, or un-cook, as the case may be. My main problem is the refrigerator, which is always stuffed to the gills – my produce takes up a lot of space, especially the greens, competing with his meats & cheeses & ten zillion bottles of weird condiments, sodas & Gatorade mixed with Coke (gross! He also eats Snowballs – ever had one of those? congealed chemical gelatinous GOO – he loves them, He talked me into trying a bite.TOTALLY GROSS!).My bags of kale, collards, parsley, spinach & lettuce take up a lot of space, he doesn’t think it’s fair, but he also doesn’t give me a hard time about it. I juice frequently, my favorite is Granny Smith Apples, mixed greens, and 1/2 lemon – I have a Sampson single-auger & it takes about 5 minutes to clean up. It would be even quicker & I’m sure, healthier, to just make this a smoothie, but I love it as a juice so much, I can’t quite go smoothie yet. I buy the produce for the week, wash it, pat it dry, & store it in ethylene-absorbing bags (these really work, BTW). I shred up my salad staples of carrots, cabbage & celery with my Salad Shooter into a tub to last the week (other ingredients are chopped on preparation). I keep a bag of frozen bananas at all times for breakfast smoothies or late night sweet cravings (homogenized with some kind of berry on hand for an “ice cream” – tho I do this rarely). Sunday shopping & washing & chopping for the week takes maybe two hours, tops. I have almonds soaking almost all the time, for almond milk, which is the base of my breakfast smoothies or just a drink for a quick snack. We have a local natural foods store which PROMISES it carries really raw almonds – and I believe them, maybe just because I want to. They also carry really raw oats, which is my favorite breakfast, soaked in almond milk with dried coconut, chopped dates & raisins overnight & mixed with chopped apples in the morning, but the smoothie is the usual. It’s quicker, and filling. Almond milk & frozen bananas, and then – whatever’s on hand, berries, or maca & cacoa (can’t handle the maca without the chocolate). I always add granular lecithin (not raw) & 1-2 tbs of ground flax, which I grind in my Tribest & keep in the freezer in a little yogurt container. Salad dressings are pretty simple, flax oil or olive oil & lemon. tho I keep a generic sunflower, almond or cashew puree on hand to fix up as a dressing or a dip for veggies. It takes five minutes to make after soaking, and keeps for a week at least, and I can throw a couple spoonfuls in a mini-bowl, and season it as desired at the moment. Fruit is easy – I don’t like to do much of anything to my fruit except just eat it. (Exception: banana & berry smoothies, described above). I run the dehydrator maybe once or twice a year for dried peppers or limes to use as seasonings. Then once or twice a month for my staple raw “bread”, – I pop the “bread” in the fridge or the freezer, for those occasions when I really want a sandwich. Typically, avo, romaine, tomato, & cashew cream cheese – but I find I don’t really want a sandwich very often anymore. Since I make the bread from almond pulp and flax, and I use way more almond milk than “bread”, I take the “bread” to parties or non-raw friends, who almost universally love it, especially with a simple seed cheese spread. But it’s kinda heavy for me to eat on a regular basis, tho the fiber in the flax will sure keep you regular – eat flax everyday & you will experience the principle of “one in, one out”.

My partner is increasingly accepting my version of dinner, as long as I slap some piece of meat or vaguely meat-based dish into the mix for him, and braise his cauliflower or broccoli. The less of a deal I make about it, the more he just tries my stuff on his own, and decides he likes it. I try not to make a big deal out of it.

Simple is better. When I started out on this raw experiment 6 years ago, I was obsessed with food & complicated recipes, and equipment (well, I was always obsessed with kitchen equipment, I can’t blame raw for that!). Now,I rarely use more than my big white dollar-store bowl, my favorite knife,my juicer and my Vita-Mix. When I pull out the spiralizer or the mandolin, I’m usually puttin’ on the dog for some SAD friend, or it’s a special occasion, or I’ve seen some really great recipe on this site, and I want to try it! BTW, it’s a little bit of a downer seeing the generic grey silhouette attached to my profile, contrasted with all your lovely colorful photos & avatars. But I can’t upload a photo, I understand it’s something that won’t be fixed until the new release of the site. Anyway, simple is better, I guess I got a little complicated in trying to explain my version of simple – but try it, you can keep it simple and easy, and I’m always impressed by the intelligence & creativity of the members of this site; there are so many good ideas in this thread. My guiding principle is: eat food close to the ground whenever possible, and keep it simple.

Topic: Being Raw / Being Raw without the Nuts

Zoe, I have noticed your comments of late about not eating nuts. I’ve looked through some of your recipes and I am wondering if you have any plans to edit your old ones, substituting the nuts, or adding new ones. I for one would really appreciate it. I really need to watch my nut intake, but I also need to watch my fat intake. I would be soooooooooo appreciative of any recipes you have that don’t have nuts and not too much fat. Although I have been a raw foodist since 1999, I still struggle with my weight, which yo-yos up and down. I know this is not good, whether it is on a SAD diet or raw food diet. I don’t typically do grains, but I am considering adding them as I never seem to feel satisfied and then I crave high fat food. It is a vicious cycle and I am so ready for it to end. I am searching for another way and hope to find something that leaves me satisfied and at a healthy and consistent weight.

Hmmm. . . maybe I should have started another thread. Oh well.

Topic: Being Raw / Clean, Icelandic fish; to eat or not to eat, that is the question.

The,

(if) fish is ‘healthy’ (Dr. Mercola says it is ;) ), then I know it is best to eat it raw.

My question is

1. do Icelanders eat fish raw? I imagine so but I do not know.

2. how can you prepare raw fish so it tastes good??? Do you just eat it like so, I doubt that.

3. if the fish is not raw, what is the best way to cook it.

4. are some types of fish better raw, or cooked?

Thanks and God bless,

Shawn

Hey newbie, great link, I had it already posted for MOTH at a different post (you might have overlooked it). WWOOF is a great way to see the world. Some people jump this way from country to country and maybe you get stuck somewhere??

My advice, DO IT! I would if I’d be independent and maybe only a holiday there would be great.

In regards of Europe, yes, the currency is stronger, but the expenses are higher… since the Euro came into place… So think about it… But there is a lovely place on Ibiza, an island belonging to Spain you might want to check out TreeofLife. There is one of the Wwoof places and it looks awesome!

Go guys, go, and enjoy :)))

Topic: Other Stuff / Economic Meltdown in Iceland

It is a very powerful feeling to know that so many peoples lives are in your hands to do with what you will.

I cannot even imagine how it would feel to be so sick to relish in the misery of others. I also cannot imagine why one would want to but history is full of sick greedy bastards that will do anything no matter how despicable to get what they want and the rush they get by having their thumb on people, to decide who lives and who dies and when.

Topic: Being Raw / Clean, Icelandic fish; to eat or not to eat, that is the question.

Thank you meditating for your 20 cents. Its appreciated.

It is very sad that people cannot get along these days. But I am not surprised because this is just the way Jesus said it would be.

Even friends and family members (in my book, them being vegan, raw, or not, makes almost no difference) are often against each other. They swear, fight, kick, beat, yell, and even kill often for little reasons. The largest percentage of murders these days have been by family members and friends. Close friends even.

So, yes… this is VERY VERY sad, and I agree with you.

Back to fish (please)

So, fish is a great (supposedly) food and it might just be the reason (in part) why many Icelanders are often very ambitious, energetic and NOT lazy. Though all their meats and most of their food is organic. But, they are into vaccines (its mandatory) and lots of candy.

But the problem with fish is its often polluted…right? But then, Icelandic being VERY clean helps a lot…. right?

As far as it being wrong to kill something…. The way I see it is this.

~ We are not animals. I AM NOT, an animal. I refuse to be called an animal, no offense. And like someone else said here, a fish would eat you if you were the size of a small shrimp.

Furthermore, Jesus ate fish. God said it was ‘OK’ to eat animals (though most I rather not eat, I am a vegan still, now).

Also, fish fills in on vitamin D, B12, omega 3’s and 6’s and much more… I suppose (?), the good outweighs the bad, especially in Iceland.

Thanks a ton!

~Shawn

Topic: Food Preparation / Tips on blender usage?

Part of the “trick” to a smooth smoothie may be in the order you “load” the blender. I start with something raw and soft (banana, avocado, etc.) and add some juice. Then add something green and leafy (like spinach). Frozen fruit makes up my top layer. I start with minimal juice and add a little more if needed for consistency. If it’s too runny, add more frozen fruit. I got my load order ideas from the recipe section of vitamix.com.

Power always wants more power in todays world. I honestly dont believe the power elite will be happy until the choice government is Minitrue, Minipax, Miniplenty, and Miniluv.

My understading is that coconuts are not nuts, it is actually a fruit, despite the “nut” ending. At least that is what the doctor of my highly nut-allergic daughter said when I ask him if coconut poses a problem for her.

Topic: Health & Beauty / itchy scalp + dandruff

A few months ago I switched over to more natural shampoos(Trader Joes brand) and cut back the amount of times I washed it a week. That and about 2 times a week I do a cider vinegar rinse. My scalp is much better than it used to be. Once a month I will massage scalp with coconut oil and leave it a few hours until I shower. Overall the combination of changes has gotten rid of any itchiness. Coconut oil with brown sugar has made big change on my skin too!

Topic: Health & Beauty / Braggs Aminos Healthy??

I noted that Braggs aminos are a very popular ingredient in quite a few recipes in this site. I have never used it, since I seem to remember somebody saying that Braggs aminos was not healthy because it comes from soy beans.

I’m now debating whether or not to include this in the recipes I make. People’s comments seem to suggest that the aminos have a great flavor. I dont eat soy or soy products since I don’t trust the bean. Am I right? should I worry about this?

I would appreciate any comments. Thank you!

Topic: Other Stuff / Economic Meltdown in Iceland

Ever thought that this has been part of the plan all along. The powers that be are wanting things to fail, then they step up and say hey we can help you all and then we are all slaves to them because they rule everything, they have the food, the money, they have us all drugged up and say hey you do our will and we will give you your thyroid fix or whatever.

My husband thinks that is stupid because he thinks they will want the world to continue running. but think about it people who want to rule the world are sick and they are only thinking of themselves and if they control everything they can decide what goes where and to whom and they wont care as long as they have what THEY want…

remember history always repeats itself, so look at all the kingdoms of the past the royalty lives in a lap of luxury while the peasants starve.
