The most natural hair coloring is henna. Although, I think mostly it not recommended to use over chemically colored hair. If you decide too, be careful and follow the directions. You could try matching your natural hair color and henna the colored parts but since your hair is highlighted you will have areas that are different colors anyhow. The henna color can turn out differently depend on the original shade of hair.
The only other thing is to have all your colored hair chemcially dyed to match your natural hair color and that way you won’t have any roots. Go to a hairdresser to have this done – sounds like you have a few shades in your hair already – it will be tricky.
There really isn’t anything else you can do really. Except to cut your hair off -which might not be such a bad thing if you don’t mind it since you are doing no poo. You get a fresh start which will make it easier since you won’t have to deal with a bunch of damaged hair.
Funny, I just coloured my hair this morning using a product called ‘surya henna’. It is the best one I’ve found, using raw ingredients and based on ayurveda herbs. It says it can be used on previously highlighted hair, hair that has undergone perming, straightening etc. They have a lovely range of colours too.
Thanks for all the suggestions! I’ll try the henna product before I jump to shaving it off.
Henna’s fun. It’s like plastering your head with grainy mud. Hehe… it stains though (skin, clothing, etc.) so be careful about splats.
When I was in high school I bleached my hair to within an inch of its life, and then hennaed it, and then I had hot pink hair for a while. HA! It wasn’t exactly the look I was going for, but I worked it. ;o)
