Hello, I recently started growing sprouts with a jar. I started with clover and that turned out really great, but my problem has been with the the bean mix I bought. The water looks very nasty brown when I rinse them and my boss said that they can cause botulism if I am not careful. So they were looking strange and I do not know what they are supposed to look like but I freaked out and tossed them. I rinse them in the morning, after work and before bedtime, maybe I need to rinse more or were they supposed to look that way? I could really use some advise before I start a new batch. I bought a sprout jar at the health food store. First time some fruit gnats got in them so I threw them out and then the second time is the strange color and all.PLEASE HELPPPPPP!!!!!!

The water from beans can be grey, brownish, maroonish. It all depends the color of the bean hull.Tho after pouring off the soaking water and a couple rinses, the water from the daily rinses should be clear.I fill the rinse water clear to the top of the jar. This way all the seeds gets a gulp of water. Then pour off.Make sure when you turn the jar over it will get plenty of air in the jar. I have mine set up on a wooden plate rack. It can hold 8 jars. Maybe more. One last thing it should not be hot in your home. Nor should they be in the sun.
I posted some sprouting directions on my blog here: http://kristensraw.blogspot.com/2008/04/this-is…
Hope this helps :)
