Fresh Fig and Green Tomato Salad with Basil

This simple salad recipe adapted from Fig Heaven: 70 Luscious Recipes for the World’s Most Luscious Fruit (William Morrow
2004) is a fresh way to make the best of the end of summer tomatoes and start the fall season with delicious figs.
Ingredients:
4 green zebra tomatoes, cut into 1/2 inch wedges
4 large ripe figs, same as above
½ cup torn fresh
basil
½ cup thinly sliced red onion
3 tablespoon olive oil
salt to taste
Preparation:
- Combine the tomatoes, figs, basil and onion in a serving bowl.
- Sprinkle with salt and pepper.
- Drizzle the salad with the olive oil and splash the vinegar over the top.
- Gently fold the ingredients together.

I did find figs, and tried this with shallots and a sprinkling of lavender flowers in addition to the basil. Delicious!

also...when you use figs, do you eat them with the skin on or scrape out the insides?

I just ended up with a huge bowl of small, unripe (green) tomatoes, but I don't think that they are zebra tomatoes. Do you think they will work for this recipe?
I am going to scour the neighborhood for a neglected fig tree...I'll let you know how it all works out.

As luck would have it, I just bought some raw figs yesterday. I will definitely try this!
